Maths 'How To' Page
Welcome to our Maths 'How to' page. On this page you will find video clips that relate to learning in the classroom. These clips will be short, will feature the strategy or knowledge we are working on, with opportunities for students to practice by solving some problems. These are available pre-class, and at any other time to help build a solid understanding.
Using Google Forms to Budget
We are learning how to use Google Forms to enter data, and to create graphs. We've used it to enter our Olympic Maths data and created graphs, and now we are going to learn how to use it to keep a record of our class money. We are going to have to create formulas so that the programme does all the calculations for us.
Here's a hint for finding out what your balance is when you have had income or expenses. I wanted the programme to take my opening balance and add or subtract any income or expenses, and place my new balance directly under my opening balance. My opening balance was $65. I got a $40 income payment so I wanted the programme to add that to my existing balance. I didn't want to have to change the formula on each row (not much anyway) so I wanted to always have a formula that added or subtracted if there was information in the cells.
Here's what I did:
My opening balance is $65 and it is in cell E3. So in E4 I placed this formula
=sum(E3+C4-D4) . This means I asked the programme to add anything in C4 and subtract anything in D4 to my balance from E3.
For the next row I placed this formula, =sum(E4+C5-D5). What do you think I put in the next row down?

Using ONE reliable strategy for both Addition and Subtraction
There are myriad of mathematical strategies that can be applied to solving addition and subtraction problems. Many are confusing, and some cannot be applied to all problems (resulting in students often becoming confused about which strategy they can use). So in Room 14, most of our students are learning ONE reliable strategy that can be applied for both addition and subtraction double digit (or larger) problems, and this strategy works every time no matter what.
Geometry: Position and Orientation

Ordering Fractions with the same denominator and with different denominators (Making Equivalent Fractions)
Solving Division problems by Reversing
We are learning that one of the fastest ways to solve simple division problems is to reverse them, and use our multiplication knowledge to solve them.
Using Arrays to Solve Multiplication Problems
We are learning how to solve multiplication problems by using our times tables knowledge and an array to help organise our workings.
